Description: Depending on my availability and schedule, I will perform editorial consultation, including line-editing (includes copy-editing and word-change suggestions) the following: novels, essays, short stories, nonfiction book manuscripts, stage plays and screen plays and suggest possible changes in plot, character development, setting, pacing, dialogue; or, where appropriate, leave it alone and let you know what works and why.
• Rate: $50/hr. reading, analyzing, and consulting. Two-hour minimum.
• Sample rates for 12 pt. font, double-spaced work:
• Short story 15 pages or fewer: 1 hour read and 1 hour meeting - $100
• Novel 250 pages: 20 hours. $1000. Includes detailed notes via MS Word on e-copy (preferable for both client and me) or hand-written on hard copy. Also includes, when appropriate, a written summary or one hour meeting.
Quote will be based on format and length submitted material. I will provide a quote prior to the commencement of any work. Payment is 50% to begin work; 50% at final consultation. The last 50% may be adjusted up or down as per actual work involved and mutual agreement.
Before you commit to a manuscript edit and/or consultation - whatever your genre may be, please understand that your work may be subject to criticism and comment, as well as praise and suggestions. My job is not to simply make you feel better about your work, but to make your work better. (Then you'll feel better.) It's to help you get it in the best shape possible for your purposes, be they commercial publication or personal gratification, and everything in between (such as self-publishing).
Finally, I reserve the right to reject a manuscript consultation and/or edit for any reason, such as subject matter, scheduling, or if I think I am not the best person to help you with your manuscript. Thank you. -- Scott Lax
